The Middle East Solar Energy Industry Association (MESIA) stated that 2018 is expected to be a year of large-scale promotion of solar energy in the Middle East and North Africa.
According to MESIA's “2018 Solar Energy Outlook Report”, the planned PV project capacity reached 11.86 GW. 4.9 GW of large solar projects are under construction, of which 1.8 GW is located in Egypt and Jordan and Morocco total 1 GW.
Projects larger than 10 megawatts have already been awarded or are being tendered with a total capacity of 1.14 GW.
The large-scale solar power generation capacity in the Middle East and North Africa is 1.36 GW, including 467 MW in Jordan, 353 MW in Algeria and 323 MW in the United Arab Emirates.
Projects planned for 2018 also include 350 MW in Egypt, 50 MW in Lebanon and 800 MW in Morocco. Among them, the Moroccan project is in the bidding phase, and other projects have also been announced.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are expected to lead the solar industry in more tenders.
MESIA pointed out that in addition to large-scale solar energy, commercial and industrial roof solar energy has begun to show an increasing trend. Jordan, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are all at different stages of developing a regulatory framework.
MESIA also expects to further adopt energy storage solutions such as batteries and pumped storage in the Middle East, as well as more electric vehicles.
