Bangladesh has started work on its second submarine cable landing station in the Patuakhali district of the country.

The new connection to the 20,000km-long SEA-ME-WE-5 submarine cable, which stretches from Singapore to the Middle East to Western Europe and connects 17 countries, will provide high-speed internet services at less cost than the first cable.
Area project director Parvej Monon Ashraf, project director, Regional Submarine Telecommunications Project, Bangladesh (SEA-ME-WE-5), said that currently, about 50m people are using the internet in the country.
The company is presently providing internet connectivity through the only cable station in Cox`s Bazar.
There is no alternative way to restore internet communication if this station goes down for any reason.
As a result, the authorities are building this second site in Patuakhali, he said.
Once the country gets its second connection, it will obtain bandwidth of more than 1,300 gigabits per second (Gbps) in addition to 200 Gbps bandwidth from the existing SEA-ME-WE-4 connection.
The country obtained its first submarine cable connection, SEA-ME-WE-4, in 2006.
